A domestic argument on Tiki Lane in Ocean View on Sunday ended with a man jumping on the hood of a woman’s car and firing several shots from a small-caliber rifle, according to police.
The victim, a 40-year-old woman, told officers she yelled for neighbors to call the police, and her partner, 44-year-old Rilson Lonomaikai Rodrigues, yelled, ‘Try call the (expletive) cops! I going kill you and kill your kids!’ according to court documents filed by police.
None of the bullets struck the woman, but one of the rounds struck the vehicle just behind the driver’s front seat, according to court documents.
Police reportedly found three spent .22 caliber bullet casings at the scene.
Rodrigues then fled in the area in a maroon sedan.
A bail bondsman who put a GPS-tracking ankle bracelet on Rodrigues while he was bailed out for separate offenses helped officers track Rodrigues down at another location in Ocean View. He was arrested, and detectives allegedly recovered a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition from the car.
Rodrigues was charged Tuesday with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree reckless endangering, first-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree property damage, and being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.
The most serious charge, second-degree attempted murder, carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole.
In addition, Rodrigues was charged with failure to maintain bail or bond for violating his bail obligation.
At Rodrigues’ initial court appearance today, Kona District Judge Kimberly Taniyama set his bail at $121,000 and ordered him to return Monday for a preliminary hearing.
Rodrigues remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
